- At 150 years old, Skarloey is the oldest of the Narrow Gauge Engines, hence his nickname
- He is also the oldest engine on the Winter City Railway, making him the "father" of the railway
- He also gets his nickname from his crimson paint
- He was once scared of an old bridge, but conquered his fear to rescue Rheneas from the bridge after (Rheneas) ran out of water
