~Ted & The Stray is the second episode of the first season of The Adventures Of Tinker & Co..~
A stray dog follows Ted home from the grocery store, hoping to find a home.
It was a marvelous spring day in Winter City. And Ted was at the supermarket, buying some groceries.
"That'll be $9.00 please." said the cashier.
Ted paid for the groceries and walked out to his '57 Chevrolet Belair, taking out a grocery list to make sure he got everything.
"OK, I got the butter, milk, eggs, cheese, carrots, juice,....yup. I got everything." said Ted as he got in the car and drove off for home. Little did he know that he was being followed.
When Ted got home and as he was putting the groceries away, he heard a scratching noise.
"Huh? What's that?" he thought to himself. Curious, he walked to the door and opened it. When he did, he say a little gray puppy holding a sign that read "Will you adopt me?" on it.
"Oh you poor little thing.." Ted said sadly. "Of course I'll adopt you."
"Really? Thanks!" said the puppy. Ted was surprised.
"A talking dog?!" he thought to himself.
"Is...something wrong?" asked the pup.
"No! No." said Ted. "I just think it's neat how dogs can talk. Say, what's your name, little guy?"
"Rocky". the pup replied.
"Well, Rocky," said Ted, "I'm Ted. And this'll be your new home."
"Looks great." said Rocky.
At that moment, Ted's younger sister Shelly, along with his housemates, Tinker, Speed Buggy, Babu, Hong Kong Phooey, and Melody Valentine entered the house. they had just gotten back from a bowling match. After Ted introduced his new friend to the rest of the gang, Tinker jumped into Speed Buggy and drove off to the pet store. He returned with dog food, dog treats, dog toys, a dog bed, a dog water and food dish set, and a rawhide bone for Rocky to chew on. He also got a collar with a badge showing a green recycle sign on a green background.
"Wow! I look great!" said Rocky as he tried on his collar.
"Welcome to the family, Rocky!" said Tinker as he petted the little dog's head.
"Yeah, welcome!" said Speedy.
Rocky smiled as wide as dogly possible. The next morning, Ted took Rocky to see his friends, the narrow gauge engines, who were 5-year-old Skarloey, his 8-year-old brother Rheneas, 9-year-old Sir Handel, who is a bit of an obnoxious snob and a resident prankster, 10-year-old Peter Sam, who is an art enthusiast and supporter of the arts, 11-year-old Rusty, a narrow gauge diesel who also was a supporter of the arts, but had a taste for music than for art itself, 12-year-old Duncan, the Nerf fanatic of the bunch, and 66-year-old Duke, who the others liked to call "Grandpuff", because of his age, who was taking a nap.
"Hey, Ted! Who's your friend?" asked Skarloey.
"Guys, this is Rocky. He's my new puppy." said Ted. Upon hearing Ted's voice, Duke woke up.
"Huh? Wha? What happened?" He questioned. Ted explained to Duke about Rocky.
"I see." said Duke, who then fell back to sleep.
Just then, Ted looked down and saw Rocky sleeping at his feet.
"I guess it's naptime." Ted thought as he picked Rocky up. When they got home, Ted put Rocky in his puppy bed and draped a blanket over him.
"Good night, Ted." Rocky said in his sleep.
"Good night, buddy." said Ted as he left Rocky to sleep.
The next morning, Rocky woke up and went to have breakfast with Ted and the gang. But when he got to the breakfast table, he saw that Ted was nowhere to be seen.
"Where's Ted?" questioned Rocky.
"He left." said Tinker.
"Where'd he go?" asked Rocky.
"He's a street performer." replied Babu.
"What's a street performer?" asked Rocky.
"What Babu means is that every morning at Knapford Station, Ted performs songs and plays his guitar on one of the platforms. When people walk by, they drop money into his guitar case." explained Speedy.
"What's the money for?" asked Rocky.
"To pay his share of the rent." said Tinker. Then he explained to Rocky about how the house they were living in was owned by Fred and how in the first week of every month, the rent is due.
"OK I understand now." said Rocky. "But when's Ted coming back?"
"He'll be back around 2:00 in the afternoon." said Phooey.
Later that afternoon, Ted came home, and Rocky immediately jumped into his arms.
"Hey, buddy!" said Ted.
"Hey, Ted!" said Rocky.
After Ted put his guitar away for the day, he and Rocky left to visit Skarloey and Rheneas' father Victor and his clumsy crane assistant Kevin at the Winter City Steam Works.
"Hey guys." said Ted.
"Hello, Ted, my friend." said Victor as Kevin sped by.
"Hey Ted, who's your friend?" asked Kevin.
Ted introduced Rocky to Victor and Kevin, and they volunteered to show Rocky around. As they did, however, Kevin went too fast and crashed into a flatbed of cans of paint that Edward had delivered. Ted grabbed a metal garbage can lid to shield himself and Rocky from the flying paint cans, which bounced off the lid and only impacted Victor, Kevin and Edward.
"Rocky, are you OK?" asked Ted. Rocky nodded.
"Sorry guys." said Kevin.
"It's OK, Kevin. Besides, it was an accident." said Edward. "I think I'll just go get cleaned up."
While Edward was getting cleaned up at the wash-down, Ted and Rocky helped the workmen clean up the mess. Seeing the spilled paint gave Rocky an idea. He then whispered something in Ted's ear.
"That sounds like a great idea!" said Ted. Then he explained Rocky's idea to Victor, who also agreed. Victor then got out a piece of paper and filled 4 old baking pans with 1 color of paint in each. Then, Rocky took a sponge and started making a sponge painting. When he was finished, it turned out to be a bright yellow flower.
"That's amazing!" said Ted.
"Thanks!" said Rocky.
Victor and Kevin volunteered to keep Rocky's painting at the Steam Works to dry. When Ted and Rocky got home, Ted took Rocky into the bathroom to clean the paint off Rocky. Ted made sure the water was not too hot nor too cold, then put in the bubble bath.
"OK Rocky, ready to get clean?" asked Ted. Rocky shuddered.
"N-No.." He said.
"Aw, are you afraid?" asked Ted.
"Yes!!" Rocky finally managed to say.
"Don't worry buddy. The water's harmless." said Ted.
"If...you say so." said Rocky as he climbed into the warm water. "Wow!" he then said. "This feels great!"
"See? what'd I tell you?" asked Ted as he took off his jacket so he can clean Rocky.
After Rocky's bath, they had spaghetti and meatballs for dinner. Then it was time for Rocky to go to bed. To avoid having an accident in the bed, Rocky went to the bathroom and washed his paws, climbed into his bed, and fell fast asleep.
