Summary

Thomas meets his match when a new engine comes to Winter City.

Story

One day, Thomas was listening to a new Bee Gees CD and reading a new Captain America comic, both of which he had bought at Totally 60's when Edward came in.

"Thomas," Edward called.

But Thomas didn't hear his brother because of the headphones he had on.

"Thomas," Edward asked, "can you hear me?"

Again, Thomas couldn't hear Edward.

"Thomas," Edward called again.

No matter how many times Edward called Thomas, he couldn't get a response.

"Well," thought Edward, "there's only one thing to do."

Edward went over to Thomas' CD player and unplugged it.

"Hey," said Thomas as he took his headphones off, "I was listening to that!"

Edward chuckled.

"Welcome back to Earth," said Edward.

"Ha, ha, very funny," said Thomas, "but seriously, what is it?"

"Ernie called," said Edward, "he wants us to meet a new engine at the docks."

"Oh," said Thomas, "Okay. Let's go!"

With that, they went to the docks and found a purple tank engine with white and gold lining. The number "1014" is painted on the engine's coal bunker in the same color. The engine also had a brass plate with its name on it on its boiler.

"Hello, there," said Edward, "I'm Edward, and this is Thomas. Welcome to Winter City!"

"Thanks," said the engine, "I'm happy to be here!"

"What's your name," asked Thomas.

"My name is Ryan," said the engine.

"Well, Ryan," said Edward, "How would you like a tour of Winter City?"

"Sure," said Ryan, "why not?"

With that, Thomas, Edward, and Ryan left to take Ryan on his tour. During the tour, Thomas took out his I-Pod and started listening to a Boston remix while Edward told Ryan about Winter City.

"And over there," said Edward, "that's Totally 60's. It's run by our friend Scott Tracy. they've got the best milkshakes in town!"

"Yum," said Ryan, "I'd love to go there some time!"

Just then, Thomas, who wasn't paying attention to the tracks, suddenly came off the rails and started to roll down a hill.

"Help," Thomas yelled.

Edward heard Thomas and noticed this.

"Hang on, bro," yelled Edward, "I'll save you!"

Edward grabbed a robe, made a lasso out of it, and tried to lasso Thomas, but he missed.

"Or not," said Edward.

Edward and Ryan could only watch as Thomas rolled down the hill until crashing into a brick wall.

"Oh no," said Edward, "we better give Victor a call."

"Who's Victor," asked Ryan.

"He's a good friend of ours," said Edward, "he runs this place called the Steam Works, where he fixes engines."

"Like a hospital," asked Ryan.

"Pretty much," said Edward.

Soon, Victor arrived with the breakdown train to take Thomas to the Steam Works. Elsewhere, Ernie Devlin, the controller for the railway, was in his office being measured for a new suit. When he heard the news, he left immediately for the Steam Works. When he arrived, he rushed to Thomas.

"Are you alright, Thomas," asked Ernie.

"I think so," said Thomas.

"What happened," asked Ernie.

"Apparently," explained Victor, "he was listening to his I-Pod and wasn't watching where he was going."

"I'm really sorry, Ernie," said Thomas, "I'll try to be careful next time."

"I'm not to upset about the I-Pod thing," said Ernie, "I'm just glad you're alright."

Ernie then turned to Ryan.

"Ryan," said Ernie, "I'm placing you responsible for all of Thomas' jobs until Thomas is repaired."

"Yes, sir," said Ryan, "and I'll try my very best to get everything done on time!"

"Atta boy," said Ernie.

Thomas was shocked when he heard what Ernie said to Ryan.

"Ernie's trying to replace me," Thomas thought.

Eventually, Thomas was as good as new and was on his way home, where he had a quiche for dinner with Edward and Ryan.

"Hey," said Ryan, "what do you call a pirate with a small piece of wood in his finger?"

"I don't know," said Edward, "what do you call a pirate with a small piece of wood in his finger?"

"Long John Sliver," said Ryan.

Edward guffawed at Ryan's joke.

"That was so funny," said Edward, "you must be really good at telling jokes!"

"Hey, Ed," Thomas called.

"Oh, hey, Thomas," said Edward, "I didn't see you there."

Thomas sighed.

"It's fine," said Thomas.

Edward was surprised at Thomas' tone.

"Are you alright, Tom," asked Edward.

"I guess so," said Thomas.

But Edward could tell something was troubling his brother.

"Do you want to talk about it," asked Edward.

"No thanks," said Thomas.

Edward held up a piece of the quiche.

"Wanna have some quiche," asked Edward, "it's really good."

"No thanks, bro," said Thomas, "I'm not that hungry."

Thomas grabbed an orange from the fruit bowl and went to his room.

"Gee," said Ryan, "what's troubling him?"

"I have no idea," said Edward, "but, I'm sure he wouldn't like it if I kept on pressuring him to tell."

Soon, Ryan had finished his piece of quiche and was wiping his mouth.

"That was delicious," said Ryan.

"I'm glad you liked it," said Edward ,"if you want, I can give you the recipe."

"That would be swell," said Ryan, "thanks!"

Soon, Ryan left, and Edward went to Thomas's room and knocked on the door.

"Hey, Thomas," said Edward, "Wanna watch a movie?"

"I guess," said Thomas.

Soon, the brothers were watching The Muppets Take Manhattan. Edward had even made some popcorn and was happily snacking away while Thomas just sulked during the movie.

"Are you sure you're feeling alright," asked Edward.

"Yeah," said Thomas, "totally."

After the movie ended, Thomas went back to sulk in his room.

"Man," said Edward, "I've really gotta do something about this."

The next day, Edward went to Totally 60's to see if his friend Scott Tracy had any ideas for what was bothering Thomas. He went inside and found Scott wiping the counter.

"Hey, Scott," Edward called as he entered.

"Hey, Ed," said Scott, "Pull up a seat and I'll be right with you!"

Edward took his usual spot by the counter and sighed.

"How are you doing today, Ed," asked Scott.

"I'd be doing a lot better, as a matter of fact," said Edward.

"Oh dear," said Scott, "so, the usual?"

"Yeah," said Edward, "One cookies n' cream milkshake topped with whipped cream and vanilla pound cake cubes."

"You got it," said Scott.

Scott made Edward's milkshake and gave it to him.

"So, my friend," said Scott, "what's eatin' ya?"

"It's Thomas," said Edward, "I'm worried about him."

"Why," asked Scott, "is he doing alright?"

"I don't know," said Edward, "ever since this new engine called Ryan showed up, he hasn't been himself."

"Ryan," said Scott, "I think I've seen him before."

"Oh, really," asked Edward.

"Yeah," said Scott, "we gave him a free meal as part of our "New Engines Eat Free" deal."

"I didn't even know you guys had that deal," said Edward.

"Well, you do now," said Wally Pickles, the assistant manager.

"Anyways," said Edward, "I think he must feel upset about Ryan for some reason."

"I think I know," said a voice.

Edward looked and saw Ernie. He had been in the seat next to him, having a sesame seed bagel and sipping a mug of coffee.

"What do you think, Ernie," asked Edward.

"I think Thomas might be jealous of Ryan," said Ernie.

"Of course," said Edward, "why didn't I think of that?"

"Well," said Ernie, "let's go back to your house and ask him."

"Yeah," said Edward, "let's!"

Ernie and Edward paid there checks and went back to Edward and Thomas' house. But when they got inside, they heard laughter.

"It sounds like it's coming from Thomas' room," said Edward.

They went to Thomas' room and found Thomas and Ryan laughing together, both of them watching one of Thomas' favorite web-series, Studio C, on Ryan's I-Pad.

"Wow," said Ernie, "it looks like they've met."

"Yeah," said Edward, "it does."

"Hey, Ed," said Thomas, "I made a new friend!"

"I see that," said Edward, "By the way, Thomas, were you jealous of Ryan when he first came?"

"I was," said Thomas, "but then I thought I'd invite him over to have a talk. And it turns out we have a lot in common."

"Like," asked Edward.

"We both like Captain American," said Thomas.

"And we like The Bee Gees," said Ryan.

"And we both like the FudgeZilla milkshake from Totally 60's," said Thomas and Ryan in unison.

"It's great you two were able to become friends," said Ernie.

"Yeah," said Thomas, "it was!"

"Well," said Ernie, "I'd love to stay, but I've gotta go. Bubbles' ballet recital is tonight."

"Alright," said Thomas, "see ya!"

With that, Ernie left.

"Anyways," said Edward, "how's about a game of Mario Kart?"

"Sure," said Thomas and Ryan in unison.

With that, they went to the living room to play some Mario Kart, Edward pleased to have his brother back to normal.
